Transformational Gifts & Community Impact
Community investment has shaped care close to home and continues to shape what is possible.
For more than 75 years, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has been built and strengthened by the generosity of individuals, families, businesses, and community partners who believe in the importance of high-quality, locally delivered healthcare.
Transformational gifts that support major facilities, advanced technology, and long-term capacity have been central to our hospital’s growth. These investments reflect shared values: access to care close to home, responsible
A Legacy of Community Investment
Phase One: Building the U.S. Highway 2 Campus
In 2013, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital opened a new, state-of-the-art Critical Access Hospital and Rural Health Clinic on U.S. Highway 2 in Manistique. This milestone marked a significant moment in the hospital’s history, made possible by thoughtful planning and strong community support.
From the outset, hospital leadership pursued a deliberate two-phase master facilities plan. Phase One intentionally focused on building a strong clinical core, leaving some services off-site, allowing the hospital to grow responsibly in response to changing demographics, advances in medicine, and the evolving needs of the population we serve.
Community generosity was critical to bringing this vision to life, with more than $1 million raised to support Phase One. That investment laid the foundation for a modern campus designed to serve the region for decades to come.
Growing to Meet Community Needs
Phase Two: Expansion & Renovation
Building on the success of Phase One, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital completed a $12.8 million Phase Two Expansion and Renovation, bringing the hospital’s long-range facilities plan to fruition.
This expansion strengthened care delivery by consolidating services on a single, accessible campus and reducing barriers for rural residents who previously had to travel long distances for essential care.
Key elements of the Phase Two project included:
- A 30,900 square-foot expansion and renovation
- A Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Aquatic Therapy Center
- Expanded chemotherapy and infusion suites
- Growth and modernization of the Alan W. Ott Rural Health Clinic
- A new Specialty Clinic
- A dedicated Administration and HomeCare & Hospice building
By consolidating clinical and non-clinical services, Phase Two improved care coordination, enhanced patient experience, and created space for continued service growth, all while maintaining the hospital’s commitment to five-star care in a thoughtfully designed environment.
Advancing Care Through Technology
Medical Imaging & Diagnostic Excellence
Transformational investment has also allowed Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital to remain at the forefront of medical imaging and diagnostics, ensuring patients receive accurate, timely care close to home.
The hospital’s imaging capabilities now include advanced MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, nuclear medicine, and fluoroscopy. The integration of advanced fluoroscopy equipment has expanded diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, enabling real-time imaging that supports safer procedures, improved accuracy, and enhanced patient comfort.
These investments reflect a broader commitment to modernization: adopting technologies that support clinical excellence and prioritize safety, efficiency, and the patient experience.
Impact Beyond Hospital Walls

Transformational giving strengthens more than facilities and equipment; it strengthens the community.
Today, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is the largest employer in Schoolcraft County, with close to 400 staff and physicians, and approximately $38.6 million in annual payroll and $39 million in benefits, contributing directly to the local economy. Independent analysis estimates that the hospital’s presence supports hundreds of additional jobs and generates significant indirect economic impact throughout the region.
Beyond healthcare delivery, the hospital invests in community health and wellness initiatives, including behavioral health services, food access partnerships, health screenings, educational programs, and collaborative efforts with local agencies to address social determinants of health.
This dual role as both care provider and economic anchor underscores why community investment in the hospital has such a far-reaching impact.
What Transformational Giving Makes Possible Next
Transformational philanthropy enables Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital to plan thoughtfully for the future rather than react to immediate pressures.
Ongoing support helps the hospital's position:
- Prepare for future facility enhancements
- Invest in evolving medical technology
- Strengthen and sustain a skilled healthcare workforce
- Expand services as community needs change
While specific future projects will continue to be shaped by formal facility planning studies and community needs assessments, the purpose remains unchanged: ensuring that high-quality, local healthcare remains accessible, resilient, and responsive for generations to come.
Transformational giving creates the flexibility and foresight required to meet tomorrow’s needs with confidence.
Naming Opportunities
Naming Opportunities Policies and/or Listing of Naming Opportunities
Naming opportunities offer a meaningful way to align philanthropic support with lasting impact. Through transformational projects, donors may choose to recognize individuals, families, or organizations while strengthening care for the community.
Opportunities vary by project and scope and are guided by established naming policies to align with the hospital’s mission, values, and long-term needs. Recognition may be associated with facilities, programs, or spaces and can be structured through outright gifts or multi-year commitments.
We welcome conversations with individuals, families, and businesses interested in exploring naming opportunities for transformational projects.
A Shared Commitment to Care
The story of Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, at its core, is one of partnership; neighbors investing in neighbors and a community choosing to care for its own.
We are deeply grateful for the generosity that has shaped our past and strengthened our present. As we look ahead, we remain committed to responsible stewardship, thoughtful growth, and collaboration with those who believe in the power of strong, independent local healthcare.

Pride in Building a Healthy Community
Rob Mach
Chief Executive Officer
“When I think about what makes Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital strong, one word stands out: community. Our hospital exists because this region believes in caring for one another, and that belief is reflected every day in the way care is delivered, supported, and sustained.
From the earliest stages of our Master Facilities Plan, we have taken a thoughtful, long-term approach to growth, balancing fiscal responsibility with the evolving healthcare needs of our rural population. This commitment has allowed us to expand services, consolidate care on one accessible campus, and improve coordination among providers, all while remaining independent and locally guided.
Our responsibility extends beyond our walls. We are proud to support the health of our community through outreach, partnerships, and programs that address both medical and everyday needs. Whether through behavioral health services, food access initiatives, health education, or collaboration with regional partners, our team is dedicated to whole-person health across the Upper Peninsula.
The challenges of recent years have reaffirmed the essential role of Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, not only as a healthcare provider, but as a stabilizing force for our region. I am continually inspired by the dedication of our staff and the trust our community places in us. It is an honor to serve alongside a team and within a community that truly cares for one another.”
