About

A diverse group of six healthcare professionals, including doctors in white lab coats and nurses in blue scrubs, stand together in a hospital corridor, smiling confidently at the camera.

A strong community needs a vibrant hospital, and a vibrant hospital requires a developing community. Fortunately, in Schoolcraft County, we have both.

Our History

Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (SMH) has a rich history of serving the community with cutting-edge healthcare and personalized patient care. Founded in 1950, SMH began as a small, independent critical access hospital dedicated to meeting the needs of the local community. Over the years, our hospital has consistently evolved to address the changing demands of healthcare and ensure the highest quality of services. We stand proud to offer these services as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit healthcare organization.

Our Growth & Expansion

In 2013, SMH marked a major milestone by relocating to a modern facility on US Highway 2. This move represented the hospital's commitment to growth and innovation, providing an enhanced environment for patients and staff alike.

The hospital continued to grow and innovate, culminating in a significant $12.8 million expansion project completed in 2022. This project added our state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Center, equipped with advanced therapeutic resources to aid in patient recovery.

New infusion suites were also introduced to improve the comfort and care of patients undergoing treatments, alongside a co-located administrative building to streamline operations and support staff efficiency.

Keeping Our Community Healthy for Generations

Through decades of change, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has remained committed to our mission to provide exceptional care. From humble beginnings to transformation into a modern nonprofit healthcare facility, SMH continues to be a cornerstone of the community, delivering compassionate, quality healthcare to families in the Upper Peninsula.
